First Look – 411 on Having One or Not

Are you debating between having a first look prior to the ceremony and seeing each other for the first time while walking down the aisle? Have no fear, Cloud 9 is here! Let us make your decision easier. Keep reading to learn more about first looks!

What is a first look?

Let’s start with the definition! A first look is when the couple sees each other for the first time on the wedding day. Typically when a couple has a first look, it is right before family and bridal party pictures. This will take place with the couple and photographer/videographer.

History

First looks have evolved over the years. Traditional first looks originated from arranged marriages. The bride and groom didn’t see one another until the bride was walking down the aisle in case the couple tried to escape and not follow through. This tradition then turned into a superstition. People believed that it would be bad luck for the couple to see one another before they were married.

First Looks

Calms Nerves

Having a first look before the ceremony can help calm everyone’s nerves and get the jitters out. Emotions are heightened during first looks and all eyes are on you during the ceremony. You and your partner could be more reserved and bottle up your emotions. Not only are you sharing your this moment with your partner, you’re also also sharing your moment with your guests.

Dramatic Effect

On the flip side, you and your partner could be the complete opposite. Excitement could take over and perhaps you want everyone to experience the happiness, joy, and happy tears of when you first see each other while walking down the aisle.

Privacy

You can take this time to be with one another, chat, laugh, and enjoy each other in an intimate setting. Couples can feel more comfortable and emotions will shine through. This could be one of the few moments you have alone time throughout the night.

More Time

More time to spend with your guests and more time for pictures! If you have your first look before the ceremony, you are able to knock out the majority of your pictures beforehand based on logistics. After, you can dive right into taking pictures with your partner, bridal party shots, and finish with family pictures. If you don’t finish all of your pictures before the ceremony, you probably finished the majority of them. You won’t spend all of cocktail hour taking pictures, and you will be able to say hello to your guests! Go and enjoy your celebration!

There is not a wrong choice. It all depends on what you want and your priorities. Whichever you choose, your planner will talk through the different ways you can create your timeline for your dream wedding!
